Cartiera Amartruda, Amalfi, Italy

Amartruda, based in a 12th-century mill, adheres to the highest, time-honored standards of quality and craftsmanship. First established in the 1300s, it is a highly regarded manufacturer. It purveys the finest, hand-crafted paper products, including cards, notebooks, and albums. Amartruda’s clients include many important entities worldwide, including the Vatican.

It was my pleasure to develop a line of paper products in conjunction with Amartruda of Amalfi, Italy. In collaboration, we are pleased to join our creative efforts in the production of these unique products for artists, special events, and weddings.

I love working with Amartruda paper. And although “working with” is a phrase artists often use regarding their materials, in the case of Amartruda, it seems literally true. The paper itself is my partner and work companion, making its own unique contribution to the final creation.

In the midst of making a watercolor, the paper responds flexibly and forgivingly, allowing me to easily erase or change colors as I go along. If the wind carries away my work in progress, as it once did in Venice when a watercolor I was making flew into a nearby canal, the paper protected my composition, leaving its colors and contours intact.

When the work is finished, it is that much better for having been created on Amartruda paper. The paper has a way of absorbing and preserving color that is unmatched by any other paper I’ve used. Simply said, I love Amartruda paper and all the ways it helps me translate my inspirations into colors and forms.
